Marimba was first introduced as an extra-curricular activity at Parktown High School for Girls in 2001. From the start the Marimba Band made name for itself as a highly dedicated and enthusiastic group of girls. The original band has grown over the years to include beginner, intermediate and advance groups. The PHSG Marimba Band has performed at many functions and venues over the past few years including the following: the Rentmeester Festival in the Tshwane State Theatre, Pretoria (2004); a BBC international broadcast (2004); Kyk-net, DSTV (2004); National Union of Educators (2005); Youth Arts Festival (2005); National Marimba Festival in Boksburg (2006 – 2009); Insurance Institute of Gauteng (2009); Woman’s Association of South Africa (2009); Kindermusik South Africa (2009); EES-SIYAKHA (2009), the Golden Key Society (2009), NAPTOSA (2010) and Siemens (2010). The Marimba Band lastly took part in the National Eisteddfod (2010) where the band achieved Diplomas across the board in three categories and was accordingly invited to take part in the regional showcase of the National Eisteddfod.
