Information

Maggie Momba was born and bred in Bikoro, Province of Equator/Democratic Republic of Congo. Growing up in the heart of Africa taught her the precious privilege of having access to clean running water.

Prof. Momba holds the following qualifications: BA degree in Education, BSc Honours and MSc degrees in Biology, MSc and PhD degrees in Microbiology. Today, after years of specialising in the field of water research, she is a C2 Rated Research Professor at the Department of Water Care of Tshwane University of Technology and the first woman research professor at the University.

Prof. Momba is the author of numerous water research-based books, chapters in books, technical reports and peer-reviewed articles. Her research achievements led to an international award for ‘Outstanding Community Support” in 2004, a National Women in Water Award and the Vice- Chancellor’s senior research medal in 2005. These awards elevated her status as a force to reckon with, in terms of water research in South Africa and beyond. Membership of scientific committees is indeed an indication of researchers’ ranking and assessment in a specific environment.

Prof. Momba is a member of no fewer than 13 national and international scientific committees; among others, the South African Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in Eastern Cape Water, Water Research Commission (WRC) steering committees, the Water Institute of South Africa, the Editorial Board of Water SA, the International Water Association, the DNA Bar-coding of Life Committee, and reviewer of about 6 refereed journals. She is a mother of two children and a devoted Christian.

What would your talk at TEDxJohannesburg focus on?:

Water, Water Sparsely Here and Not Much Fit to Drink
We all need water to live, yet this most precious substance is ignored, abducted, squandered and unappreciated. Why is something that should be free be stolen? How can water be dangerous to those living with AIDS? If we choose to get our own, how do we find it and store it? What should we know about water that can save our lives?

Where can we experience you as a speaker?:
This year, at Tshwane University of Technology and TEDxJohannesburg.
