We are delighted to announce another TEDxJohannesburgSalon, taking place on Monday 13 November 2017, from 08:30 to 14:30, at GIBS, in Illovo. This TEDxJohannesburgSalon, themed Between2Ends, is organised in collaboration with the Gordon Institute for Business Studies (GIBS) Network for Social Entrepreneurship, on the back of last year’s successful first chapter.

The TEDxSalon format allows us to focus on a specific theme or issue of interest, providing a platform and opportunity to spark robust discussion. The focus for this event, naturally, is social entrepreneurship:

South Africa’s social and economic development needs are particularly layered and nuanced. Problems are notoriously difficult to solve, and solutions often polarising. Consider the opposite ends of the country’s socio-economic spectrum—the not-forprofit end, offering social value, motivated by benevolence; and the for-profit end, offering economic value, motivated by profit. The situation begs more than one question: Why do we choose to rely so heavily on such extremes to meet our development needs? And, what should we make of the middle, the seemingly empty space between the two ends? We learnt, in a clear and concise talk delivered last year by author Kerryn Krige, that in fact the space between the two ends is anything but empty. It is here where the rich and promising world of social entrepreneurship lives, and thrives.

The speaker line-up for TEDxJohannesburgSalon: Between2Ends, is equally rich, and aptly varied.

Speakers include the following:

Bongi Mkhabela: Impresario of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital

Michelle Constant: Business and Arts Catalyst

Duduzile Mkhwanazi: Internet-access Evangelist

Roche Mamabolo: Entrepreneurship Guru

Nickey Janse van Rensburg: Urban Farming Researcher

Christoph Castellaz: Mobile Health Enabler

T.O. Molefe: Thinker, Editor, Writer

We're hoping for answers to some burning questions, and we're thrilled at the prospect of the inevitable questions that beget even more questions.

And in true TEDxJohannesburg fashion, you can expect your mind to be challenged and stretched. Maybe even fried.
